Final Lesson: Grammar and Writing Styles

Finally the last lesson, grammar and writing styles.

They are various components in grammar, such as clause, verb, noun, preposition, interjection and so on, while in Malaysia, all these basics has been taught in primary and secondary schools, so i will not go into it too much, I will only share some of the confusing words.

Principal VS Principle

Principal is the Headmaster or Headmistress of a school. For example, Principal of ABC High School.

Principle is the a rule or a fundamental law. For example, Bernoulli's principle.

Stationary VS Stationery

Stationary is a adjective describing not moving, not movable. For example, He is in stationary state.

Stationery is the materials for writing like pens and papers. For example, A pen is a stationery.

When you are writing, you should always mind your styles of writing.

You should always plan and organize message before writing it out. This involve understanding the audience and purpose, understanding the subject and situation and also the order of the message, which will come first and which will come last.

Then, mind your language, you should follow 4Cs, which are Clear, Concise, Coherent and Correctness.

You should also mind your tone of writing. You should be polite, be positive and concerning reader's perspective.

Lastly, you should also mind your formality, you should concern who are you writing to, which situation you are writing for, and give it a suitable formality for it.

That's all, hope you can be a good writer too. We may meet again in another part of our life journeys. I may smile to you when I see you again.

Lesson 3: Types of writings

Today I'm going to share about the types of writings.

First, Exposing Writing.

• The purpose of exposing writing is to explain.
• In this writing, writers should not include their personal opinion.
• The writing should be supported with facts and figures.

Second, Descriptive Writing.

• The purpose of descriptive writing is to describe.
• The writing should be specific and include every detail.
• The writing can be poetic.

Third, Persuasive Writing.

• The purpose of persuasive writing is to persuade.
• The writer can write their own opinions in order to persuade readers to do something.
• The writing should be supported by justifications and reasons.

Last, Narrative Writing.

• The purpose of narrative writing is to tell a story or to entertain.
• Writers can create their own characters and the stories.
• "What happened next?", this question will pop up in readers' mind after reading a good narrative writing.

Lesson 2: Why do you write?

Today I am going to share what I had learned from the English Class this week.

Nothing will happen without any reasons, also, no one will write anything without any purposes. Thus, whenever we are writing, we should always identify the audience and the purpose of writing.

What is an audience and what is a purpose? An audience is a particular group of readers or viewers that the writer is addressing; a purpose is the writer's main reason for writing.

There are 4 types of audiences, which are:

1. Yourself: Knowing exactly how much detail is required (Informal Writing)
2. Personal friend(s): Good idea of how much detail is required (Informal Writing/ Formal Writing)
3. Person(s) that you don't know personally: Reasonable ideas of how much details is required (Formal Writing/ Informal Writing)
4. Remote audience: Writing must be explicit (Formal Writing)

There are also primary and secondary audience, where primary audience is the reader(s) whom the document is primarily intended; secondary audience is the reader(s) who may read part or all of the document with a reason.

We can also identify our audience with demographic factors, for examples:

Age Group

Gender

Language

Income and Status

Race and Ethnicity

They are 4 main reasons for writing, which are:

Describe

Entertain

Explain

Persuade

This is the Rhetorical Triangle of writing

Lesson 1: Writing Skills

Well this is my first time writing a blog, so there may be many mistakes, if you as a reader can aid me in improving my writing skill and my blog by commenting below, I will really appreciate it. So...lets start.

The definition for "Writing" that my lecturer taught me  is "To communicate specific information or ideas, utilizing the formats, language and content relevant to the workplace". For me, it is like a combination of alphabets, spelling and grammar to deliver a message via reading.

A written message should follow the ABC of writing,which are accessible, basic and clear, for short, it means a message should be understandable.

When we are writing, we should always follow the process of writing, which is:
Prewriting➡Drafting➡Revising➡Editing➡Publishing

Why shall we follow the process? This is to make sure the spelling, grammar, and most importantly the message can be understood by the readers easily. When we start to write, we should always "Prewrite", which is making an outline of the contents and the messages that we want to write. After that, we can start "Drafting" by writing out the message with full sentences. Then, we should "Revise" it to find out any mistakes in the sentences, and "Edit" it by correcting the mistakes. Finally, we can "Publish" the  the wherever it should be published.

Whenever we start writing something, we can ask ourselves some questions to improve our writing, Below are the examples of questions and how I answer it for the exercise that my lecturer gave us.

What is my purpose?
To write a freestyle poem regarding "LOVE".

How do I say what I mean?
Use the suitable words that everyone can understand.

How do I avoid grammatical errors?
Keep Revising the written poem.

How can I create visual effect?
Simulate the scenario which possibly experienced by most people.

In the English class, my lecturer told us to write a freestyle poem about "LOVE" as an exercise, and the poem below is the poem that I wrote together with my friends.

Love must be filled with trusts,
Or else it will be filled cheats and lies,
Violin plays the melody of memories,
Ending up with tears.

Lives with each other,
Or else stays alone,
Volunteer to give concessions,
Eternal love will last forever.

Life is like that,
Opportunities do not follow your pace,
Voice out your love,
Eventually you will get your love.
